When it comes to industrial manufacturing, “heavy-duty” isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a physical challenge. We recently took on a project involving 40mm thick rubber profiles, and the results perfectly illustrate why waterjet technology is the undisputed king of thick elastomer fabrication.
Cutting rubber at this thickness requires a delicate balance. You need enough power to punch through nearly 2 inches of dense material, but enough finesse to ensure the edges don’t taper or “mushroom” under pressure.
Why Waterjet for 40mm Rubber?
While traditional die-cutting or mechanical sawing might struggle with material this thick, our waterjet process offers several distinct advantages:
-
Zero Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ): Unlike laser or plasma cutting, waterjets are a “cold cut” process. This is vital for rubber, as heat can cause melting, toxic fumes, or warping of the profile.
-
Intricate Geometry: Notice the internal slots and the clean, angular “arrowhead” ends of the profile in the photo. We can achieve tight tolerances even on thick-gauge stock.
-
Material Integrity: High-pressure water (often mixed with garnet abrasive for materials this dense) preserves the mechanical properties of the rubber from top to bottom.
The Challenges of Thick Profiles
Cutting 40mm (approx. 1.57 inches) presents unique hurdles. As the stream passes through the material, it naturally wants to lose energy and “lag,” which can lead to a slight taper. To counter this, we utilize:
-
Dynamic Head Compensation: Our machines tilt slightly to counteract the natural taper of the jet.
-
Pressure Calibration: Finding the “sweet spot” ensures the water cuts through cleanly without splashing back or deforming the soft surface.
Performance in Every Cut
The finished profile shown above is destined for a high-impact industrial environment. Whether it’s for dock bumpers, vibration dampeners, or heavy-duty seals, the precision of the cut ensures that the part fits perfectly into its assembly without the need for secondary finishing.
